NEW YORK - One River School honored mixed media artist Cameron Welch with its first-ever Emerging Artist Award. Presented to him by Founder Matt Ross, previously the CEO of The School of Rock, Welch received an award, $5,000 grant and a solo exhibition on show from Tuesday, April 30 – Thursday May 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m at 198 Allen Street.
For Ross, since opening the school in 2012, always had the idea to create an award to recognize living artist, a sticking point in the schools’ curriculum, and built up a love of his artwork since being introduced to him a year and a half ago.
While accepting the honor, Welch, originally from Indiana, praised One River School’s ethos to bring contemporary arts education to the suburbs.
“I think what you guys do is incredible. When I was a kid growing accessing contemporary art when I was a kid until college wasn’t really the easiest thing to do and you guys do so much to bring that to young minds. It’s huge, and it’s invaluable.”
Welch’s work evoke modern-day mythology through the use of discarded and often nostalgic items, such as CDs, together with various paints and styles.
Welch recently wrapped a solo exhibition “MONOLITH” at Nino Mier Gallery in Los Angeles and has been featured in group exhibitions in Sweden, Belgium and New York already this year.
