Golden Globe Award winner Sam Waterston will present actress Jane Fonda with the 2018 Trophée des Arts next Monday, November 12, 2018 during the annual French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) Trophée des Arts Gala at The Plaza Hotel in New York.
Famous for his roles in cinema as well as in television, Sam Waterston has co-starred in two major programs with Jane Fonda: HBO’s drama The Newsroom (as television network president Charlie Skinner) and Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie (as a divorce lawyer Sol).
When Fonda started shooting Grace and Frankie, she wrote that she was excited when Sam Waterston was cast as co-star Lily Tomlin’s husband. “It feels good to have my pal from The Newsroom with us on this new adventure. Most of my Newsroom scenes were with him and I grew to care for him a lot,” Fonda wrote.
The annual FIAF Trophée des Arts Gala will raise funds to support FIAF's educational and cultural programs and is co-chaired by Samantha and Nabil Chartouni, Clo and Charles S. Cohen, Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier, Jeff Koons, Gide Loyrette Nouel, Rothschild & Co, Nicolas Durand, and Clémence and William von Mueffling.
“Being at the crossroads of French and American culture, FIAF is thrilled to honor Jane Fonda with this year’s Trophée des Arts. She is an eloquent and excellent actress who has helped create cultural bridges between the United States and France,” said FIAF President Marie-Monique Steckel.
The Trophée des Arts Gala will also present the Pilier d’Or to Sebastien Bazin, an innovator and leader in trans-Atlantic hospitality. “It is particularly fitting that we are honoring his achievements at the Plaza Hotel — a gem of the AccorHotel portfolio and exemplar of its commitment to excellence,” Steckel said.
Created in 1992, the Trophée des Arts annually recognizes an artist who exemplifies FIAF's mission of French-American friendship and cross-cultural exchange. It has been bestowed upon French and American artists and cultural icons, including: François Cluzet, Alain Ducasse, Jacques Grange, Marc Jacobs, Jeff Koons, James Ivory, Angélique Kidjo, Philippe de Montebello, Robert Wilson, Françoise Gilot, and 2017 recipient Peter Marino.
