Riverside Park presents an iconic and scenic look at the Hudson River on six miles of green space. It was lovingly designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted in 1875 and continues to provide a refuge for urban-worn New Yorkers. This week they celebrated their annual spring gala. The guest of honor was Charles McKinney, who has given over 30+ years of service to the design and maintenance of the park. He has just finished writing yet another 25 years worth of conservation and planning, ensuring the park’s continued success. He has said that the park will always need human care, as an urban park is nothing but a large potted plant.
The cocktail and dining tents were erected on the track at 73rd Avenue. Delicate lights spun like webs in its eaves. The track sits directly on the Hudson, and with clear walls the tents had an excellent view of the sunset over the water. Small hors d’oeuvres were served during cocktail hour, including some very delicious flower petal goat cheese balls. Two open bars provided a great go-between on the astro-turf. The guests were serenaded by singer-songwriter Nellie Mckay from Prairie Home Companion.
After cocktail hour, everyone was dressed in their spring best as they attended a lovely sit-down dinner and auction that took place in the dining tent. In attendance park trustees and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver.
